Pregnancy Q & A

Here you will find some answers to the most common questions.

  • How can I find out if I’m pregnant?

Pregnancy symptoms vary. The most noticeable sign is usually a missed menstrual period. But if your cycle is irregular, you may not realize you’ve skipped a period. Instead, you might notice other common pregnancy symptoms, such as:
    ● Nausea.● Fatigue.● Dizziness.● Frequent urination.● Sensitivity to odors.● Breast tenderness.● Mood swings.
Some women experience light bleeding or cramping during the first few weeks of pregnancy. These symptoms are often mistaken for a regular period. If your period is lighter than usual or you notice other new symptoms, it’s time for a pregnancy test.
Many women choose to take an over-the-counter test purchased at a local pharmacy. You can also visit Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery for a blood or urine test.
Blood tests are the most accurate way to check for pregnancy. Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery offers onsite lab facilities so you get your results right away.

  • When should I start seeing an OB/GYN?

Your first prenatal visit usually takes place 6-8 weeks after your last menstrual period. If you have certain health conditions, you may need to see a provider sooner.

If you’re not sure when to start receiving care, call the office. The Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery staff helps you determine when to schedule your first visit.

  • What OB/GYN services will I receive during my pregnancy?

During your initial and subsequent visits, you receive a complete physical examination. Your provider checks your weight, blood pressure, and temperature.

They also ask about your family and personal medical history. You might also receive an ultrasound to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Your provider then draws blood to screen for common health problems. In most cases, you also provide a urine sample. These samples are sent to the onsite lab.

The office staff then helps you schedule appointments for the rest of your pregnancy. After your first visit, you’ll see your provider every four weeks until the 28th week of your pregnancy. From 28-36 weeks, you’ll visit every two weeks. After 36 weeks, you’ll visit weekly.
