Infertility Q & A

Getting pregnant often takes time. Researchers estimate that many healthy couples take up to a year to conceive. A year can feel like an eternity if you’re anxious to have a baby. But keep in mind that about 90% of women eventually get pregnant without special care.
Some women, though, may experience ongoing fertility problems. If you’ve tried to get pregnant for more than a year, you may be diagnosed with infertility.

An infertility diagnosis can be devastating, but many conditions that cause infertility are treatable. At Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery, you can receive the help you need to get pregnant.

Female infertility is often caused by irregular ovulation. In some cases, you might have abnormalities within your uterus or fallopian tubes. These issues may prevent your eggs from being fertilized. They can also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting on the uterine wall.

Common causes of infertility include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Obesity
  • Scarred or blocked fallopian tubes

Infertility is not only a woman’s problem. In fact, about 30% of fertility problems are linked to men’s issues. If you have trouble getting pregnant, your partner needs to get checked, too.

Many women who struggle with fertility are eventually diagnosed with PCOS. This hormonal disorder can cause heavy or irregular periods. PCOS is also linked to ovulation problems, which can interfere with your fertility.

Your provider first needs to find out why you have trouble getting pregnant. The Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery team performs a variety of tests, including blood tests and ultrasounds. These tests provide valuable information about what’s going on inside your body.

If you have trouble ovulating, medication often corrects the problem. Your provider may prescribe a drug that helps you ovulate regularly. You might also need to take medications to stabilize your hormones. These drugs help fertilized eggs implant in your uterus.

If you have a structural problem with your uterus or fallopian tubes, you may need surgery. The team helps you review your surgical options and choose the procedure that’s right for you. The Midwest OB/GYN & Midwifery team provides ongoing care, both before and after your surgery.
